On March 29, the comprehensive DC-side replacement work for the 12 MW/12 MWh frequency modulation energy storage project undertaken by Yuanhe Energy at Hunan China Resources Power Liyujiang Co., Ltd. was successfully completed and put into operation. This marks a milestone in Hunan’s first battery replacement for thermal power frequency modulation energy storage, injecting new momentum into Liyujiang Power Plant’s achievement of all annual targets and tasks.

Without altering the existing civil and electrical infrastructure, this project replaces the original air‑cooled battery system with a high‑performance 1P liquid‑cooled DC side solution, optimizing the entire battery container system and significantly enhancing key metrics such as energy density, cell temperature control performance, and cell consistency. For this project, Yuanhe Energy did not adopt its patented modular compartment Cube5 plus product; instead, in order to meet the established set of technical specifications and on‑site requirements, it custom‑designed a 30‑foot liquid‑cooled container while retaining core technologies such as modular compartments and cluster‑level temperature control.

1MW Grid-Frequency Regulation Liquid-Cooled Battery Container
During the trial run, the system operated stably. Thanks to the adoption of Yuanhe Energy’s cluster-level temperature control system, under continuous 1P frequency modulation conditions, the temperature difference within a cluster did not exceed 4°C, the temperature difference among battery cells within the stack over 24 hours did not exceed 4°C, and the temperature difference between clusters did not exceed 1°C, ensuring that the inter-cluster current imbalance did not exceed 2A.

Yuanhe cluster-level temperature control ensures that the temperature difference between clusters remains no greater than 1°C under 1P frequency modulation.

Under 24-hour 1P FM operating conditions, the temperature difference between battery cells shall not exceed 4°C.

As a project to replace energy storage batteries for frequency regulation in thermal power plants, this project presents a higher level of technical difficulty than new construction projects. , which is mainly reflected in the following aspects: 1. There are uncertainties associated with the original control system. The original energy storage system used the “Lingxi” EMS system developed by China Resources Smart Energy. The replaced battery system must be seamlessly integrated with the original system, which introduces a great deal of uncertainty. On one hand, it is essential to ensure the new system’s compatibility so as not to disrupt the normal operation of the existing system. On the other hand, the performance of the battery system needs to be enhanced to fully leverage the advantages of the new system. 2. Need to match the PCS, fire protection, and other interfaces of the original system. In addition to the control system, the replaced battery system must also be compatible with the original system’s PCS, fire protection, and other interfaces. This requires a detailed assessment of the existing system to ensure that the new system can effectively integrate and operate in coordination with the original system. 3. Short construction period and complex concurrent operations The project has a short construction period, requiring all construction work to be completed within a limited timeframe, which places high demands on the organizational and coordination skills of the construction personnel. At the same time, the project involves multiple disciplines and complex overlapping operations, necessitating thorough safety precautions to ensure construction safety. 4. Incomplete documentation exists. The original energy storage system was built relatively early, and some of the documentation is incomplete, which has posed significant challenges to the implementation of the project.
To address the aforementioned technical challenges, the project team implemented the following measures:
Strengthen communication and coordination with China Resources Liyujiang Power Plant and China Resources Smart Energy to ensure compatibility between the new system and the existing system.
Conduct a detailed assessment of the existing system and develop a comprehensive interface matching plan.
Carefully organize construction, reasonably schedule work procedures, and ensure construction safety.
-
- Strengthen data collection and organization, and fill in missing information whenever possible.
Through the above measures, the project team overcame technical challenges and, within just over 20 days after the equipment arrived on site, completed the removal of all existing equipment, the installation of new equipment, as well as system integration testing and trial operation. Once the project is commissioned, it will significantly enhance the AGC frequency regulation performance of the two units, meet the grid’s demand for rapid dispatch response, effectively increase revenue from frequency regulation ancillary services, and improve the project’s overall profitability.
Recently, Yuanhe Energy has also delivered several thermal power–energy storage combined frequency modulation projects—stay tuned!
