Frequency Regulation in Thermal Power
Project Introduction
The energy storage frequency modulation power station at the Haren Power Plant in Inner Mongolia was provided with a comprehensive solution by the Yuanhe team. It marks the first time in China that a modular, compartmentalized energy storage frequency modulation system has been deployed, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment both domestically and internationally. The system employs a self‑integrated 3 MW inverter system and 6C lithium iron phosphate battery cells specially designed for frequency modulation by Tianjin Lishen, achieving an energy conversion efficiency of over 85% for the entire system. The energy storage power station officially commenced commercial operation on September 1, 2020, operating reliably and stably, with an average daily Kp value exceeding 6.
By integrating Yuanhe Energy’s independently developed control system, the unit not only achieves auxiliary secondary frequency regulation but also primary frequency regulation, with the overall system performance reaching a first-class domestic level. Since the system was put into operation, the unit’s regulation performance has improved by more than 40%, and the effective regulation workload has doubled compared to before commissioning, placing it among the top units of its kind in the province. The unit’s regulation process operates independently, unaffected by the energy storage system; instead, the energy storage system supplements and corrects the unit’s regulation process, thereby ensuring operational safety while enhancing unit performance. Since commissioning, the energy storage power station has never experienced a failure-induced shutdown, with an average of 3–5 cycles per day—and including shutdowns for maintenance—the system availability has exceeded 99%.
